Sewer Backups & Prevention

Understand what causes sewer backups, who is responsible for repairs, and how to prevent problems at home.

Sewer Backups & Prevention

A sewer backup can occur when wastewater cannot properly flow through the sewer system. This may result in water backing up into drains, toilets, or basements.

This page explains what causes sewer backups, what to do if one occurs, and how to help prevent future issues.

What Causes a Sewer Backup?

Sewer backups can happen for several reasons, including:

  • Blockages from grease, wipes, or other materials in pipes
  • Tree root intrusion into sewer lines
  • Damaged or aging pipes
  • Heavy rainfall or high system demand
  • Issues within private plumbing or the municipal sewer system

Backups can occur on either private property or within the municipal sewer system.
