Water Infrastructure & Responsibility

Learn how your water service works and who is responsible for each part of the system.

Water Infrastructure and Responsibility

Who is responsible for your water service line?

Most homes in Innisfil are connected to underground pipes that bring clean water in and carry wastewater away.

The pipe that delivers water from the municipal watermain into your home is called a water service line.
Responsibility for maintenance and repairs depends on where the pipe is located.

The dividing point between municipal responsibility and property owner responsibility is called the curb stop.

Example of Curb Stop

InnServices is responsible for:

  • The water service line from the watermain in the street up to and including the curb stop
  • Maintaining municipal infrastructure on the street side of the property line

Property owners are responsible for:

  • The water service line from the curb stop into the home
  • All indoor plumbing
  • Protecting the water meter from damage
  • Keeping the water meter accessible at all times (no blocking or covering it)
  • Maintaining clear access to the curb stop on their property
  • Reporting any known curb stop issues to InnServices

Tampering with or altering the water meter is prohibited under the Town's Water Use By-law 101-21.

Condominiums and Townhouse Complexes

In some multi-unit properties, the service line may be split into multiple connections after the curb stop.

Depending on the property setup, these lines may be:

  • jointly owned by residents, or
  • owned and maintained by the property owner or management company

If you live in a condo or townhouse complex, check with your property manager to confirm responsibility.
