Winterizing Your Rain Barrel

As temperatures drop across Innisfil, it’s important to prepare winterize your rain barrel and prevent damage from freezing temperatures.

Winterizing Your Rain Barrel: Easy Steps to Protect It

As winter approaches, it's important to get your rain barrel ready for the cold months. Water expands when it freezes, and even a small amount left inside can crack your barrel or damage the spigot. Taking a little time now can save you from headaches and ensure your rain barrel is ready for the spring.

Drain the Barrel

Open all spigots and let the water drain completely. Tip the barrel on it's side or upside down to remove every last drop.

Remove Hoses & Accessories

Detach all spigots, hoses, diverters, or other attachments. Water trapped in these parts can freeze and damage them. Check rubber washers or gaskets and replace if needed. Store all accessories somewhere dry so they last longer.

Clean the Barrel

Rinse the inside with a garden hose. Remove leaves, dirt, algae, or sediment. A clean barrel keeps mold and smells from building up over the winter.

Store Your Barrel Safely

  • Indoors: Garage, shed, or basement is best.
  • Outdoors: Turn upside down or cover with a breathable tarpMake sure it sits on a flat, stable surface.

Reconnect Downspouts

After removing the barrel, reconnect any downspouts or gutters that were detached during installation. This keeps water flowing away from your home during the winter.

Extra Tips for Winterization

Do it early: Winterize before the first hard freeze of the season, typically in late fall.

Mild Climates: Even if freezing is rare in your area, draining and cleaning is still a great practice.
